Edifier G2 Gaming Headset Review

You don’t typically expect to find high-end tech for under fifty bucks. However, the folks at Edifier give all of their products, big or small, the luxury treatment. Edifier’s newest G2 Hi-Fi Stereo Gaming Headphone is a testament to the company’s commitment to quality. The G2 retails at an absurdly low $39.99, but its audio performance rivals headsets that usually cost two or three times as much. While you won’t find any sound-enhancing features or EQ software for tweaking, the G2 is perfect for those who just want solid sound without spending a fortune.

It only takes one look at Edifier’s expansive product portfolio to appreciate the company’s compassion for design and innovation. Just look at their Spinnaker Bluetooth Speakers and you’ll understand what Edifier’s engineers and designers are capable of. The G2 headset may not be as visually complex as some of the high-end peripherals, but it maintains the signature modern aesthetic and elegance.

"While you won’t find any sound-enhancing features or EQ software for tweaking, the G2 is perfect for those who just want solid sound without spending a fortune."

The G2 may be cheap, but they’re not cheaply made. The headphones are enveloped in a matte coating that repels dust and fingerprints, and they’re constructed for maximum comfort. The body is plastic, sure, but it’s sturdy and ergonomic. The red highlights around the ear cups and cable compliment the stylish build beautifully. The felt-like material encasing the speakers is soft and comfortable and doesn’t generate any heat after prolonged use. There’s also a nifty volume and mic controller integrated into the wiring.

The attached mic (which can be rotated 120 degrees) slides effortlessly to the side when not in use, and the whole headset has a nice, industrial feel to it. The mic performance is pretty standard, meaning it gets the job done without much background noise, although it doesn’t particularly stand out as anything special.

"I’m still amazed with the brilliant audio quality coming from something that costs no more than a dinner for two."

The G2 boasts 40mm sound drivers, an impedance of 450 Ohms, 98dB of sound pressure and a frequency response of 20Hz~20KHz. The audio quality is exceptional for a budget headset. When playing action-heavy games, the G2 delivers plenty of bass and overall depth. The shifts between low and high frequency sounds are well balanced, and minute details have a crisp crunchiness to them (like footsteps, guns reloading or environmental sounds). Even though I’ve spent the last few months playing games with simulated 7.1 surround, I don’t feel the G2’s stereo is a substantial downgrade due to the headset’s superb clarity and overall rich performance.

Gaming headphones aren’t traditionally used for music, but the G2 provide surprising sound quality when listening to different genres. You’re not getting as much diversity when multiple instruments come into play, but for general everyday use, the G2 is better than expected. I also enjoyed watching movies with this headset, which again, is not something I usually do or recommend with gaming headphones. Dialogue is crisp and clean, whereas orchestral highs are delivered with great oomph.

Edifier’s G2 is an excellent choice for anyone seeking quality all-around headsets on a budget. I’m still amazed with the brilliant audio quality coming from something that costs no more than a dinner for two.
