Cougar Gaming has a long running history of delivering top notch pc components, but they’ve only recently tackled the gaming peripherals market. I’ve been introduced to Cougar’s tech only recently, but after testing their newest 550M Gaming Mouse, I’m curious to delve deeper into their extensive product lineup in the near future. For me personally, the 550M is the perfect gaming/work mouse. Cougar Gaming doesn’t take the design-over-function route like so many other competing manufacturers, instead, their engineers solely focus on comfort and performance.
The 550M is simple and elegant in its design. The ergonomic body structure ensures unprecedented comfort for competitive gamers, and each individual piece is built to last. The blue and orange color combo beautifully complements the customizable LED lights enveloping the body, and the matte surface repels fingerprints and dust. The LED display on the left also serves as a DPI indicator, which is particularly handy if you’re someone who often rotates settings. The textured flanks on the left and right sides provide a slip-free grip, and the oversized scroll wheel has excellent tactile feedback for smooth scrolling. A little further back lies a programmable trigger button for quick access to extra functions.
"The 550M is simple and elegant in its design. The ergonomic body structure ensures unprecedented comfort for competitive gamers, and each individual piece is built to last."
The 550M is a bit larger than your average gaming mouse, and while its bulkiness makes an odd first impression, it delivers superb control and precision. I don’t find myself forcefully gripping the mouse, something that I usually do when gaming with smaller mice. Even after hours of working and gaming, my hand remains relaxed, without any of the typical cramping that results from prolonged online gaming.
Like with most advanced gaming mice, customization is key. The Cougar UIX System, which is downloadable from the company's site for free, provides a ton of fine tuning features for even the pickiest gamers. The 550M boasts some rather impressive specs: a 50-6400 DPI resolution, a 32-bit arm processor, OMRON gaming switches, a maximum tracking speed of up to 200 IPS, 50 G maximum acceleration and a frame rate of 12500 FPS. The 1000HZ polling rate and 1MS response time means the 550M is perfect for those seeking speed and precision.
The Cougar UIX System is well designed and easy to use. All categories are cleanly laid out, making it easy to make adjustments to various profiles without losing track of your original settings. In the performance tab, you can set three separate DPI settings to access via the trigger button, you can set double click speed and scroll speed, you can switch between slow and fast Windows pointer speed and there’s even a sniper DPI setting that let’s you drop the DPI temporarily for increased accuracy. The key assignment tab let’s you tweak things further with various key configuration options and macros assignments. There’s even a lighting control panel for fine tuning the LED to your preference.
"This is a remarkable piece of tech that brings a ton of customization options and features, and I can’t wait to test Cougar’s other new gaming peripheral releases."
I’m not a professional competitive gamer, but I do spend a good chunk of time playing fast-paced multiplayer titles. Using the 550M with games like Battlefield or Call of Duty, I’ve noticed an immediate improvement in my k/d ratio after only a few matches. The 550M’s smoothness is what really sets it apart from other gaming mice. Regardless of how quickly the camera pans during heated firefights, the mouse never lags or stutters. It's also worth noting that the 550M is excellent for everyday use. As someone who spends as much time writing and browsing the web as gaming, I enjoy the 550M’s added comfort and precision.
The 550M Cougar Gaming Mouse is somewhat of a sleeper hit. Considering this is a company I haven’t been too familiar with until recently, the 550M has already become my favorite mouse for both gaming and work. This is a remarkable piece of tech that brings a ton of customization options and features, and I can’t wait to test Cougar’s other new gaming peripheral releases.
