Go Back in Time on Your Mobile

When there's such a vast amount of gaming choices available today, it’s hard to imagine what it used to be like when early video games, such as Pong, were released. Today’s titles may be graphically superior and more complex in the stories they tell, but the classics were considered technical marvels at the time and are still relevant to this day. And since so many of them are available as mobile apps, they can easily be played on the go. Whenever you want to have a blast from the past, there’s no need to trawl second-hand shops or eBay for vintage consoles and games anymore. That’s because there's a host of original 70s and 80s titles that can be easily acquired via a smartphone.

Of course, some of the games that might be considered retro have actually never gone out of vogue. Casino and lottery games like roulette, jackpot, blackjack and slots have never waned in popularity – and there have always been environments to play them in. The big difference over the last ten years has been the arrival of online casinos and lottery such as 32red, William Hill and Caesars Casino, allowing gamers to play real cash games at any time in the comfort of their own home. The majority of casino and lottery sites these days also provide mobile apps that let gamers play these titles on the Android, Apple or Windows phones, as long as there's an internet connection or wi-fi zone.

While roulette and blackjack games haven’t changed in style since the heydays of casino gaming in the 70s, slots, on the other hand, are different now as they take advantage of modern technology. The core principle remains the same – you press Spin and see what happens – but you can play more than 100 lines at a time if you want to, and every game has its own special bonus features and rounds. Of course, there are also simple slots online, which are very reminiscent of the pub slots machines that were around in the 70s and 80s. In addition, there are also new casino games that have a touch of modern technology like the Lightning Balls jackpot game – a lotto-style game, that all you need to do is just press the “Draw” and an instant you get the result. Fast, right?

As for the original video games, they’re easy to find in the App store or Google Play. Just type in the name of that first game you ever played and you’ll either find the original or a modernized version. The Secret of Monkey Island is a great example – the iOS app takes you between the original graphics and a remastered version which offers a more contemporary gaming experience. You can even move between the two versions mid-game. If you want an easy way to get back that arcade gaming feeling, then download the Atari’s Greatest Hits app, which comes with more than 100 different games. Some of them are pay to play, such as Centipede and Asteroids, but many, like Missile Command, are free.

Retro gaming has its place in today’s gaming world, and it’s great that we can jog down memory lane whenever we feel like it. However, after a few rounds with a classic, don't be surprised if you find yourself yearning the technological fidelity of modern games – there’s no denying that the march of time always brings progress!
